“Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) on Thursday commuted the death sentence of Julius Jones, 41, who was facing execution after nearly two decades on death row. He was convicted in the 1999 fatal shooting of Paul Howell, a businessman from an affluent Oklahoma City suburb.

Jones had continued to assert his innocence, and his case had attracted widespread attention in recent years. He drew notable supporters, including celebrities such as Kim Kardashian West and American football star Baker Mayfield. Jones’s case was featured in the 2018 ABC documentary series ‘The Last Defense,’ which was produced by actress Viola Davis.”
